Background to new NanoSphere.
What does this mean in terms of functionality, performance and environmentallyrelevant sustainability?
Nanostructure remains the core element The leaves of certain plants always remain clean because dirt cannot adhere to their finely-structured surfaces and is easily washed off when it rains. The new NanoSphere also permanently transfers this natural non-stick and cleaning process to the surface of the fabric on the basis of modern nanotechnology.
Comparison of a classic textile with a NanoSphere surface The classic textile surface: The contact area of a water drop or dirt particles with the textile, and with it the adhesion, is very large. Consequently water or dirt adheres to the fabric.
The NanoSphere surface:
Water droplets or dirt particles lie only on the peaks of the nanoparticles, therefore reducing the contact area. Adhesion potential is significantly reduced, water rolls off, dirt is repelled and can be washed off more easily. Future considered thanks to new nanoparticles and new mix.
Highest levels of functionality & environmental benefits
Through the use of future considered C6 fluorochemicals, the NanoSphere finish is free of PFOA and PFOS * (For details, see box). Due to the new formula and the new nanoparticle mix, it still achieves an extremely high level of water and oil repellency and meets the most demanding washing and dry-cleaning requirements. The finish is highly abrasion resistant and the protective function remains lastingly active, even when exposed to considerable load and frequent washings.

Through the new formulation and the use of Clariant C6 fluorochemicals, the new NanoSphere achieves a worldwide unique position because the efficient and modern textile finish combines unsurpassed performance and permanence with the highest possible ecological safety.

The new NanoSphere finish also meets the challenging specifications of the bluesign standard. (www.bluesign.com). Products based on the bluesign standard guarantee that, throughout the entire manufacturing chain, only those components and processes are used that are safe for humans and
the environment. The independent industrial standard is based on the five
pillars: resource productivity, consumer protection, air and water emissions, and worker safety (www.bluesign.com).
A specially developed coating matrix ensures that the millions of nanoparticles on the surface of the fabric cannot separate from the substrate. So there is no danger that they will volatilize during
washing, dry-cleaning or ironing. The nanoparticles themselves are thermostable even up to 1700 C.
To ensure simple and safe handling in the various licensed plants and to prevent release of the nanoparticles, newly-formulated components have been developed for this future considered finishing technology. These are incorporated simply and directly into the finishing baths. The aqueous stabilized formulations can under observation of the usual protective measures for handling chemicals be relatively simply incorporated
into the finishing baths in specified quantities. The aqueous formulation assures that nanoparticles cannot be inhaled during further processing in manufacturing plants. Skin tolerance and the possible behavior in service have been examined through cytotoxicity and genotoxicity testing. In the cytotoxicity test, which is recognized and mandatory for all medical products, measurements are carried out to determine whether cell-toxic substances could be released during use. The genotoxicity test examines the
possibility of a mutagenic effect of the chemical substances. Neither test revealed biological activity. Indicators for possible skin irritation or signs of fabric intolerance were also examined.
Hohenstein Nanotechnology Quality Label confirms permanent performance and highest degree of safety in use Consistently positive properties were also confirmed through testing of the new NanoSphere finish by the internationally renowned Hohenstein Research Institute. The coating is certified as having very high and lasting hydrophobic and oleophobic properties in original state and after mechanical exposure to 5000 abrasion cycles and 30 washing cycles (with subsequent heat treatment). Testing was also carried out on the biological safety in terms of any possible biological activity (see cytotoxic and genotoxic test). NanoSphere passed all tests with excellent results, certifying its safety.
